Four rules that keep a self-custody wallet safe
Extension wallets are a favourite target for impersonation, so most of the risk sits outside the wallet itself.
- Nobody legitimate asks for your recovery phrase Not Coinbase support, not "security", not a giveaway. Anyone who asks is stealing, so treat the request as a scam and walk away.
- Verify the publisher before installing Fake extensions copy real names and logos. Check the store listing's publisher, user count and reviews, and install only from the official Coinbase Wallet page.
- Read every signature request Approvals can grant spending rights long after you close the tab. Decline anything that asks for unlimited access to a token you did not intend to use.
- Keep the backup offline and separate Paper or metal, stored away from the device. Never a screenshot, a note in the cloud, a password manager entry shared with anyone, or a photo in your camera roll.

Yes, the download and the wallet itself cost nothing. You still pay normal blockchain network fees, which are set by the network rather than the wallet, and any swap or bridge service you use inside the wallet may charge its own spread or fee — that is shown before you confirm.
It is built for Chromium-based desktop browsers, including Google Chrome, Brave and Microsoft Edge. On phones and tablets you use the Coinbase Wallet mobile app instead, which covers the same dapp, swap and NFT features.
